They barely do games, anymore.  Last I heard, the only thing they want to make is pachinko machines.

Isn't that financial suicide?

Who even knows what Pachinko is, or better yet, who actually PLAYS Pachinko?

In America, yes. In Konami's homeland, on the other hand, Pachinko is pretty much their version of slots, except it's not just confined to one city.

... America ain't the only market in the world, bro.  If memory serves, pachinko is hugely popular in Japan, largely due to a lot of gambling laws that Japan has on the books.

In my defense, I haven't seen Power Rangers since I was in grade school.

How grotesque.

So Konami is willing to just coast by on...what, the market of stupid Salarymen who think gambling is going to do anything but put them knee-deep in debt?

The poor bastards need something to keep them from killing themselves under the insane weight of Japanese working culture... well, any more often than they already do, at any rate.

Not to mention, that particular market is largely what's keeping the Yakuza rolling in yen.

What would you have liked to see from the Metal Gear franchise? I'd have liked a game about The Boss.

I'd like to see a new Thief, instead.  I heard there was one a few years back, but all I saw was a shitty Batman game.

So, the latest AC:O DLC forces Kassandra into a straight romance, regardless of player choice. Even ignoring the sexual orientation angle, invalidating player choice is a major dick move. They don't even have the "we need a direct descendant" excuse anymore, since that requirement was done away with in AC4.

Goin' through my YouTube recommendations because I'm that kind of horribly uninteresting individual, and a thought struck me.

I really hope they get around to a remaster of Final Fantasy VIII.  Or, hell, have VIII's story, but in the engine used for XV.

Invalidating player choice is a story choice for the developers. If the player is not supposed to be an all powerful god then it is understandable that there are things that they cannot change. Even if the game gives an illusion of choice but all alternatives lead to a similar result this is not necessarily a bad gameplay decision, it's a just a matter of execution and reason to determine whether it works.

The player automatically losing the gunfight near the end of Red Dead Redemption 1 is a famous example of such a sadistic result. Does it take away player agency? Yes. Even if you are fighting well you will still lose and this is an important part of the story and they make a point of it. Similarly there are plenty of games where the player character will be captured and doesn't matter how well you play, that part of the plot requires you to be caught.

In RPGs this is known as "railroading" and I've seen plenty of complaints about it but I still find myself accepting it on some occasions. It's all about how well it is done and in my opinion some of the "but muh agency" complaints are a bit childish. Video games in particular are always limiting the player because there are only so many things that they can handle in the game.
No matter what happens, no matter what my last words may end up being, I want everyone to claim that they were:
"If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you could possibly imagine."
Aww, you guys rock. :)  I feel the love... and the pitchforks and torches.  Tingly!
