Okay, so I was just thinking about memes like overly attached girlfriend.  Now granted you could argue that some girlfriends ARE a bit overzealous in their relationships - although it's hardly a gender restricted thing, which explains the spear counterpart - but I do think it's a bigger part of the "men are afraid of commitment" meme of society.

Anyway, I mostly wanted to discuss this bizarre meme that most girlfriends are jumping at the bit to get married and have kids and that most boyfriends are terrified by commitment.  Maybe my brain is inflating the pervasiveness of this trope/meme, but I still wanted to discuss it.

I'm not sure that's quite what makes that meme popular. The OAG stuff is hilariously insane, especially when paired with that smile she does.

But I do think a discussion of the whole "men hate commitment" thing is worth having, because it is staggeringly common. I think it comes out of a social feedback loop— pop culture tells men that all "normal" men fear commitment, so in an effort to be "normal" a lot of men act as though they fear commitment. Because so many "normal" men act like that, pop culture assumes that's how "normal" men are and depicts them as such, and so on and so forth.

I personally think it's a load of bunk, but all I've really got to go on is my own worldview, which I can sum up as "COMMITMENT PLEASE THANK YOU".

I agree that the OAG is just making fun of the fringe of insane overly attached people in a relationship.  Believe me, I've met a few people like that and even dated one for a little while.

The second one I do agree is something that does over generalize.  Why must all men be painted as afraid of commitment?  I have no fear of commitment at all myself, and love being in a relationship.

John, any dreaming involving inventive applications of vegetable peelers is a nightmare to the rest of us.

Could be me having been a target of a few people who attempted to attach themselves to me like social lamprey, but yeah, haven't see many of these that I find out of the question. The phrase soul mates still raises the hairs on the back of my neck and it's been nearly a decade since the last incident.
