Ariel Sharon had a dreadful military career, but his career as leader was much greater. I think Israel has really gone downhill since they lost him.

Agreed. One of the better things for Israeli politics would be for him to recover from his coma.

Also, I disagree about Sharon. I don't know much about his domestic policy, but I do have a good idea of his military record; it sucks. Total blowhard, Patton-lite, with a side of mass-murder.

He's also the guy who broke with his own party to enact the Gaza pullout, which some predicted could lead to civil war.

I'll give you Gaza withdrawal. Good decision.

The party's name is the Democratic Party. It has been since 1830. Please spell correctly.

Unfortunately, comas aren't often like the kind you see in movies where people just 'wake up' and are pretty much fine.  Mostly, the longer the coma, the harder it is to come back to 'yourself'.  If ever. :-/

True. As far as Israeli politics is concerned, he's dead. It's just that there's still an outside chance - and I do imagine that the major parties have drawn up plans in case he does come back. Mind you, if he did, and he did try to return to politics, I think he'd squash Netanyahu and anyone else like a bug.

Sharon scores 6 on the Glasgow scale. 3 is totally brain dead. 15 is conscious and not brain damaged. He has been classified as in permanent vegetative state; his brain stem shows up as intact on MRI, hence his ability to respond to physical pain stimuli, aural and visual stimuli, and that his major organ systems still function, that he opens his eyes now and then, but the rest of the scan shows the rest of the brain beyond the stem is liquefied. He's gone. He's not really in a coma anymore, his brain stem just cannot perform any higher functions than what's described above. He probably has sleep/wake cycles, too.

Sorry to spell it out, but I had to learn this stuff when my mom was dying of post-op complications. She scored a 5 on Glasgow before they could let me authorize her removal from support, as per her wishes in designating to me POA to enforce her living will.

I'm sorry you had to go through that, Mellen.  Nobody should have to, really.

I agree with what you say about the coma scale though.  There's a time when the person is gone and the body is all that's left, whether it's 'alive' or not.

Thanks Prog/Doctor. Really she wanted to not be kept alive if she had any major impairment, as she was already debilitated from years of COPD. But the law here, at least as the Adventist hospital she was at was interpreted, meant they would not withdraw support until she was beyond the beyond. It was eerie to see her at times; eyes open, but nobody home behind them. She could respond to simple, forcefully loud commands from nurses, such as, "Cough!" when they changed her tube out, would continue to do leg pedaling motions for many minutes after her PT left the room from doing muscle tone therapy sessions with her. It took nearly a month of steady decline from a 9 on the Glasgow to the five where they would follow my demand to withdraw support.

The brain stem plus a little bit more intact structure can give people hope where there should be none. The stem is nearly identical to a reptiles entire brain, hence the patient's ability to "recognize" family member's voices and faces, as a pet lizard can do just as well, imprinted with it's owner's voice and appearance. The intelligent person that the formally intact brain once contained is long gone, though.

It's not like it could have gone much lower anyway. Also, are people forgetting the Sabra and Shatila massacre? Sharon is a war criminal.

And I don't think he would beat Netanyahu, Israeli society seems to be moving really far to the right. For example, look at the riots against African migrants last year.

As if the other news stations are any better.  I think it says something about the state of journalism that just about everybody, whether they be rich or poor, urban or rural, religious or atheistic, liberal or conservative, hates the news media.

Actually, the other news stations are better by many, many miles.

The fact that those news stations still can't be considered "good" says a lot about just how horrendous Fox News is.
