That's the fasces, an ancient Roman symbol. It's a bundle of reed, representing strength through unity, and an axe representing war. It was carried by the consuls as a symbol of their power. Mussolini used it as a symbol in his promise to restore "the glory of Rome."

The 'Fasces' which where a bundle of rods tied together carried by Lictors in Ancient Rome. Varying numbers of Lictors accompanied the different Roman Magistracies. The rods signalled the Magistrates power to order corporal punishment. Outside of the sacred boundary of Rome the Lictors carried axes in their fasces symbolising the power of the Magistrate to issue the death penalty. The removal of the axes within the city was a recognition that a Roman Citizen could not be executed without trial.

Nazism is really just Fascism with a good dose of German nationalism thrown in. Also, anarchy and communism are polar opposites (incidentally, if you'd called it libertarianism instead of anarchy, most people would put it on the right).

If anything it goes to show that the left/right dichotomy is nigh-on worthless for comparing any more than two ideas.

I think maybe it'd have been better if they'd been labeled "most/kinda/most likely to fuck you over."  At least, in their pure forms.  Mixed with the others, however, you'd have the happy medium that would at least ensure that the smallest amount of people possible end up getting screwed.
