Title: Rest in Peace, Dad
Post by: sandman on March 03, 2012, 09:30:32 am
Yesterday my father passed away. He was a thrice-decorated combat veteran of WWII. He stormed the beach at Normandy and was scheduled to take part in the invasion of Japan until it was cancelled by the surrender following Hiroshima and Nagasaki. He was born in Rochester, New York, an American, the son of Scottish immigrants. He met my Scottish mother in the UK during the war, and they hit it off when they discovered that her parents had grown up in the same village as his. Following the war, he remained in the UK, married my mother, and settled down in the homelands.

In the 90s, my wife and I helped them relocate to Ft. Myers, Florida because he had always said he wanted to go somewhere where he could sit outside all day, all year, and soak up the sun. He spent the last two decades doing exactly that. He once chased a Florida alligator off of his back lawn on his John Deere riding mower waving his basket hilt claymore over his head and bellowing "Scots Wha' Hae" at the top of his lungs.

When he passed he was surrounded by friends and family. His death was peaceful and without trauma. In the last few years he had lost most of his hearing and sight and was ready to go.

He was 97.

Good bye, Dad, and try not to kick too many asses in Heaven before I get up there to guard your back.

My condolences, Sandman.  I lost my mom a couple of years ago pretty much the same way.  She would have been 86 if she had lived one more week.  It's hard to see them go, but at the same time, it's a relief that they aren't in that condition anymore.  It's tough seeing them lie there like that.

Upon consideration of this... I dunno... I don't really feel that much sorrow if a person lived to be 97 and was as kickass from cradle to grave like Sandman's dad seems to have been.  I think I'd party.  Like... an Irish wake for a Scot.

Scottish wakes make Irish wakes look like the bars in Salt Lake City at 1 PM on a Sunday. To imagine a Scottish wake, picture an Irish one, then remove all of the civility, sobriety, accountability, and propriety.

And no, I do not mourn Dad's passing. He was nearly blind and deaf and was more than ready to go. He told me last year that if Jesus didn't get off his arse and show up damn soon he was going to "have words" with him at the Pearly Gates. And if you have never had a 90+ year old Scotsman "have words" with you, consider yourself very, very lucky.

Well, the thing is that I’ve never even met a 90+ year old Scotsman.

Sounds like he was a genuinely awesome individual and lived quite a bit before his time was up.

My 90+ year old Scotsman died before I was born. :(

Tho, try having my 48+ year old Scotsman "have words" with you, too. D:
