There are also people, usually men, who actually think that a man beating is wife is just keeping his control over the family, but when a woman rebels she needs to get back in her place.

yet they're outcasts of society because they defy the stereotype of love - which is considered, according to holier-than-thou pundits "between a man and a woman." Also sad, is that most of the time - while there are some homosexual couples who don't get along either - the whole "man and a woman" thing is a bunch of fairy-tale bullshit, which is expressed in the second panel with the approved couple.

Well, frankly, I think that an ideal relationship would be between a man and a woman, and me. :P

I'd be more sympathetic if people here didn't act like they knew what they were saying when they were saying something very much wrong.

Personally I prefer year (4 digits)-month-day. I have to read both DMY and MDY and so I just prefer YMD because I can get confused with the other two (is 12-9-2012 December 9 or September 12?) and nobody uses YDM.

A) WAHHHH won't someone think of teh MENZZZ!

B) The Titanic is an anomaly, otherwise women had generally low rates of survival, crew members had the highest. Also, such thinking was part of the whole 'chivalry' paradigm, which also justified refusing women the vote.

To be fair, a lot of measurements in the "arbitrary" US system are divisible by either 12 or 16.  Those work fairly well with fourths and thirds.  Second of all, Fahrenheit is a more "human friendly" scale.  That is, it's more related to air temperature than it is water temperature.  Also, the date format does facilitate pretty easy checking of a date on a calendar, as you go to the month and then find the day within said month.

I have heard people quoting a study (but haven't seen the actual study) which claims that in ships that sank slowly women have a higher survival rate (because the crew and passengers have time to organise the escape to the boats) but on ships that sink quickly the survivors are those who were most physically fit (because in a panicked scramble for safety fit young men have the edge.)

But I think it was an old study anyway. With modern ships and safety measures things should be a bit more organised anyway. (unless we remember those recent cases where the crew abandoned the ship and the passengers...)
No matter what happens, no matter what my last words may end up being, I want everyone to claim that they were:

Not really political except for those who conflate religion and politics, but I liked it.

Wait, wait, wait. Who actually said that burning someone's house down and poisoning their dog is okay? That image just looked like some nonsense one would find on an MRA site. What garbage.

Reminds me of a situation where one time a woman got slapped once, and in retaliation tied him to the bed while he slept and burnt the house down, which was somehow justified retaliation. Mind you, I heard this by hearsay and it really seems more like a good story than a real event.
The material needs a defender more than the spiritual. If there is a higher power, it can defend itself from the material. Thus denotes 'higher power'.

Yeah I would certainly look into whether or not that was real. And even if it were, it sounds like no more than an isolated event. I can think of dozens of outrageous cases in terms of criminal law, but such cases do not in anyway represent the norm. That is why the cartoon posted here is such an awful strawman.

I've come to treat such anecdotes, even if true, as just anecdotes. They aren't that important to the overarching trend. There's going to be outliers on either side.

Fahrenheit is based on the freezing and boiling points of seawater, whereas Celsius is based on the freezing/boiling points of fresh water.  That's why there's a difference.  It's really not an arbitrary scale at all.

Why seawater? It's not something that one would boil regularly or care what the freezing point of it is.
