No matter what happens, no matter what my last words may end up being, I want everyone to claim that they were:
"If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you could possibly imagine."
Aww, you guys rock. :)  I feel the love... and the pitchforks and torches.  Tingly!

Bombing civilians does many things for PR, none of 'em good.

Well, that and the whole immorality thing.

Yeah, we really oughta try to avoid bombing innocent people.

Of course we may also have to concede that NOT bombing innocent people may not be possible if you still want to bomb people at all.

I mean it seems that killing innocents is a systemic flaw in war in general.  Anything that makes war easier just exacerbates that flaw.

Personally, I think racial pride of any kind is dumb, but I don't think people should be demonized just for having pride in their ethnicity.

Ehhh here's the thing and I think it's not really talked about but..

for hundreds of years it was not considered a good thing to be black or brown or asian.  O gray or a women or  anon-christian.

And these "pride" things are really about undoing all that damage.

No you are not stupid because you're black.
You're not lazy for being latino.
No, being gay does not make you a pervert.
Ect ect.

White people really have not had that.  White was and to a large part still is the "norm". It's good to be white.  Your life is so much easier if you're white and male and hetero.

I really didn't' appreciate that until I came out as gay.  I have faced discrimination.  I have had to deal with bigots.  But I can count the problems I have had because I am a white guy who acts straight on one hand… and still have fingers left over.

AND I as a white guy I would hazard to say that most white people don't' think of themselves as "white" EXCEPT in relation to people who are not white.

I mean we have lots of people going on about how proud they are begin Irish and Italian and German.  Those guys are generally pretty caucasian.  But that's just how most white people seem to view their own ethnicity

Now I guess we can also say the same for latinos and Asians.  Puerto Ricans don' like being called Mexican; a lot of latinos in florida get really annoyed at being assumed to be Cuban;  Koreans really do not appreciate being labeled "chinese" or worse Japanese.

But in that case we still have that whole "it's bad to be latino or asian" thing that used to be acceptable in this country.

Like I said, I think white pride is dumb.  However, I don't think we should demonize those who believe in it, not unless they think they're better than everyone else.

You show me a few instances of 'white pride' that aren't just spouting off about how the entire white race is better than any other color, and maybe I'll be inclined to not demonize them.

And I think you put this in the wrong thread because while W's detractors were largely civil in their disagreement with his policies there has been nowhere near that level of civility in discussing Obama's policies

Very few of Bush's detractors were actually anti-american.

On the other hand, many of Obama's detractors have used racist imagery, humor, and mentality to criticize Obama.

If it looks like a racist, sounds like a racist, smells like a racist, it probably is a racist.

But that's "politically correct" to call people on their shit.  The right's favorite meaningless catchphrase next to "socialism" and "communism".
Mockery of ideas you don't comprehend or understand is the surest mark of unintelligence.

There's a difference between white pride and ethnic pride. A lot of people seem to miss it.

Along with that, a lot of people like to say 'nobody who is white has ever faced discrimination'. This is false on many levels: 1) You're erasing the LGBTQ white people and 2) You're erasing the fact that the Irish and sometimes the Italians are still discriminated against. And the fact that they were badly discriminated against back in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Hell, it was even considered oppression at the time (that icky word people like to over-define). 3) You're also ignoring the disabled white folks. Being white doesn't protect you from everyfuckingthing.

So, yeah. People need to learn the differences. Small, but important differences.

I think's it more accurate to say no one was discriminated against BECAUSE they were white.

White LGBT folk were still LGBT

The Irish were Catholics in a largely Protestant nation.

Now , yes begin white doesn't' protect you necessarily if you are also ins one other group with less privilege.

But try being black and gay.  Or  an Arab Muslim.

Isn't the U.S. more Catholic than Protestant? The Irish here were discriminated against because they were Irish. And what about like the Romani, who are white and are treated pretty badly in a lot of places in Europe? It's not as simple as what shade one's skin color is.

Actually a lot of roma are dark skinned being from India ironically making them Aryan
and no prior to the 60s the mentality was that Catholics shouldn't hold office since they would kiss up to the pope

It would be even more accurate to say that white people do not experience institutional racism in the United States (or whichever other white-majority country you prefer).
