If all you're doing is dragging a block for fun and exercise that might work.
If you're trying to build a pyramid you might actually want somebody in charge of organizing the whole shit show.
Yes but the guy above is not only being aggressive, but is also adding his own weight to the project.
The leader is in charge of the project. He/she is leading the way and therefore we could assume that the project is going in the direction he wants it to go.
(I've actually seen that picture once or twice at some jobs I had.)
There is a reason kings and generals stopped leading from the front of their armies and it isn't cowardice. They started standing on a hill watching the entire thing unfold because it is the only way to make sense of it and gain control of the situation so that the people involved aren't just wasting lives and resources pointlessly.
Unfortunately, there are some people out there who will just exploit any authority they are given which tends to give bosses a bad name.
