In January a year ago he had woken at 3:00 a.m., not sure why.

Well that's completely unhelpful.

I did as instructed and it actualle went better than expected:
"Minä osaan joitakin liikkeitä hyvin, mutta toisia varsin kankeasti." Translation: "I can do some movements quite well but others quite awkwardly."
My wife got this:
"Toisiinsa sulautuneet varjomme peittivät hetkeksi alleen kaikki aikaisemmin kiperiltä tuntuneet kysymykset." "For a moment our shadows joined together and overwhelmed all the questions that seemed so difficult a moment ago." She gets extra points since that actually was a sex scene.

:In the dark:

:Grabs nearest book: which happens to be "Rousseau and the Ethics of Virtue" (This sounds bad already  :( )

:Opens to page 45: "In the state of nature, there are no covenants, no laws, no treatises, and no personal relationships."

 ??? ??? ???
So, I'll be promiscuous??

Ooh, I have quite a heap of books beside me. Let's see…

Quote
… natural philosophy in the way a gentleman should, by digging into any suspicious-looking burial mounds he could find in the neighbourhood, filling up his lizard press with as many rare species as he could collect, and drying samples of any flowers he could find before they became extinct.

What?  ???  Terry Pratchett (Snuff) is obviously not inspiring.

Next book:

Quote
I understood neuroanatomically that my motor cortex had been affected and I was fortunate that within a few minutes, the deadness of my right arm abated.

That sounds even worse.   :o  Thank you, Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor (My Stroke of Insight) but no thanks.

How about this one:

Quote
Chapter 2 showed how the human eye, working by selelctive breeding over many generations, sculpted and kneaded dog flesh to assume a bewildering variety of forms, colours, sizes and behaviour patterns.

Nope, that doesn't seem promising either, thank you Richard Dawkins (The Greatest Show on Earth).

Quote
When Andy was a teenager, he freely interacted with adult males.

Hmmm…  :-\ No thank you, Temple Grandin (Making Animals Happy; the chapter is about dogs) I think I'll stop there.   :(

Grabs nearest book, opens to page 45. First sentence says:

"This journey, once again, contains many farmiliar themes: the bridge; the naked people helplessly thrashing about in the water, unable to reach the other side; the guardians of the other world - the dog and tall woman; and then the tree, reminiscent of the World Tree, from which the traveller takes strength and courage."

WTF?

I... am not sure what to make of that. Is my sex life dead? Will it be with someone who is dead? Will it be with someone who should be dead? Will it be with one of the oldest people on the planet?  Or, just maybe, it's talking about my penis?

OK, let's see.
In 1989, communism fell,
because the
Berlin Wall
came down1
.

Communism
was left-wing, but also
god
less, which has
strong theological
connotations.

You see, religion influences attitudes towards sex, and whilst
hasty generalisations serve no-one2,
it can be reasonably claimed that

godlessness and its ideologies,
like communism, generate a sexually
liberal society, as opposed to
the sexually conservative attitudes we
have in godly, capitalist societies.

All in all, the passage suggests that you are
about to change your attitudes in some way,
from
the sexual liberalism associated with
godless communism, to
the sexual conservatism of
godly capitalism.
That, or the practical effects shall be similar.

In conclusion3

You won't be getting any.

"Nobody knows I'll try it--I'm sure the dragoons don't."

--Harry Turtledove, The United States of Atlantis

So...I'm going to try something, and the military will be oblivious.  Yay?

Stephen Pinker's "The Language Instinct".

Everybody knows how to scribble.

Right then...  :o

I thought I'd try with several more books:

"The sofa was perfect for sleeping."

From Haruki Murakami's Hard Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World. I did recently come across a dating site profile where the woman in question explicitly stated that she wanted to be fucked on a sofa. Maybe I should message her... or maybe I should try again.

"So, there was nearly no reason for me to continue in school, and the band was happening, so I quit."

Mike Mills of R.E.M. explains what turned out to be a shrewd move in R.E.M.: Fiction by David Buckley. I don't know how that helps me, though.

"Connected to the machine by a tangle of wires, armbands and suction pads, the patient does not suffer, he simply has to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, and to cease to believe in the universal assertion, the old, old story, which since the beginning of time, has been drummed into us, that the will can do anything, for you need look no further than the following example, which denies it outright, because that wonderful will of yours, however much you may trust it, however tenacious it may have been up until now, cannot control twitching muscles, cannot staunch unwanted sweat or stop eyelids blinking or regulate breathing."

Jose Saramago's Seeing manages to be of negative help, not only being obtuse on the relevant subject, but being impenetrable in and of itself. Moving on-

"This isn't some kind of optical illusion: the passage of time is slowed down on the moving train according to someone on the platform."

Brian Cox and Jeff Forshaw's Why Does E=mc2? offers a trippier prediction. I'll settle for it.

Clearly this is a sign that we must go boink on an artillery range. ;D
