Oculus Rift bought out by Facebook
« on: March 25, 2014, 08:32:24 pm »
Apparently the people who make the Oculus Rift VR headset got aquired by Facebook for $2 billion and the geekier parts of the internet are spectacularly pissed off about it.

http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2014/03/facebook-purchases-vr-headset-maker-oculus-for-2-billion/

One of the founders tries to explain himself on Reddit:

(/v/'s got Komm Susser Todd from End of Evangelion set as the BGM which is hilariously fitting to their reactions)

Now when I hear about the Oculus Rift, all I can think about is the Retsupurae video of the guy who showed off a fanservice Oculus Rift demo game that was really uncomfortable to watch.

So.....anyone wanna speculate why Facebook, a social media empire, would want the Oculus Rift, a game system?

Ironbite-full 3D Farmville?

Or it could be a case of diversification. You saw what happened when the Wii popularised motion controls, Nintendo made money hand over fist and everyone else rushed to get in on it with peripherals of their own. It could just be that Zuckers thinks virtual reality could be the next big stupidly profitable gimmick, rather than a means to strengthen Facebook even further.

Though he could also be looking to create a virtual Facebook MMO. A bit like Second Life, most likely.

It's amazing how Palmer Luckey's reputation on the internet has just taken a complete 180 now. I read somewhere that Valve had some prototype head-mounted displays, maybe they'll take this as a sign and develop their own consumer version?

Well, could always make a VR Minecraft clone.  So long as Notch and Mojang in general have fuck all to do with it other than being tangentially related.
