History has always been partly a product of the present historian, as well as the past. Historians living in the present choose what to research and write about, when and where to begin and end their story, and how to construct a true narrative. They do not, or should not, invent useful and dramatic fictions or leave out and suppress inconvenient evidence in the archives.
