Perhaps the GSA in their area isn't what they're looking for in terms of scout activities and the BSA is.  Maybe they just want to shatter the gender barriers.  Maybe a combination of both.

Ironbite-who knows at this point.

You mean preferring knot-tying to baking isn't a good enough reason?

More canoes. Less museum outings.

actually, i was thinking more along the lines of a quarter of beef, perhaps a suckling pig (you know, for when you're less than ten), a fallow field, a 7ft² firepit, and some firewood.

but cannibalism is fine, too.

You could always just make pretzels. That way, you get to do both.

...Wow, I can tell that none of you have ever been around a Girl Scout camp.

well, being a boy in a country that doesn't have girls scouts, and scouting clubs are both secular and mixed, can you really blame me?

Honestly, it really depends on where you live and the leaders of the troops in your area. In my Girl Scout troop? The leader just wanted us to have fun coloring, making pretty signs, and selling cookies. I'm sure others did activities that were more educational and adventurous, but our troop was awful. Meanwhile, the Boy Scouts were always camping and doing shit that was actually useful. It was upsetting. So I can understand girls wanting to break free from the "be a pretty girl, sell the cookies" nonsense and do some dirty work outside.
Guys, this is getting creepy. Can we talk about cannibalism instead?

Since the local troops primarily self-fund by parent donation, trip fees and cookies, yeah, your mileage will vary incredibly. My troop in Coral Gables, Florida was large and very well off, so I went to DC for 10 days as a girl scout, we did actual tent camping now and then, but mostly several weekends a year at summer camp properties in their off seasons. We also went boating and sailing, since this was in Miami. And we went to museums and the ballet, symphony, art shows and shit ad nauseum, since the leaders basically focused on developing us into well rounded, marriageable young ladies. This was back in the late sixties through seventies, btw. I doubt Troop 331 is quite that posh and prim anymore.

Well, as mellen said, it varies, but the Girl Scouts are definitely less outdoorsy overall. My sisters and their friends actually had to get in this subgroup (GECCCOS) to get their adventure fix.

Wow.  And I thought my childhood troop was bad about that.  At least we had a camp with an actual campfire.
