Though you probably don't want to pull the impaling object out like that.
Mockery of ideas you don't comprehend or understand is the surest mark of unintelligence.

Even the worst union is better than the best Walmart.

Yeah, by un-impaling himself (Instead of in a controlled environment like an OR), he probably reduced his change of recovery by a decent margin.  Considering it's in the gut, he also has possible sepsis going against him.

From the looks of things, he probably took it in the liver or stomach. He might bleed out if he doesn't get to a hospital fairly quickly, but frankly I'm more surprised he (or his friend) had the strength/pain tolerance to even pull the handle-bar out in the first place. Then again, as others have commented, the artist seems to like overstating things for shock effect.

Is a full puncture wound like that even survivable

Oh yes, easily. You can put a two-by-four through your torso and live - it all depends on where the puncture occurs. Hell, you can survive being cut in half.

There was that guy way back in the 1800's (I think) that got a 3 inch steel bar shoved through his skull and lived...they just left it in him

As far as pain tolerance goes, shock can eliminate, or drastically reduce pain.

I agree with y'all though, its injury factor is boosted beyond what would likely happen.  Not to say that bad injuries like the ones depicted can't happen with the type and force of trauma given, but they seem to be more the exception than the rule.

Well the reason I wonder is that acid must be killer seeing as it went right through the stomach

It certainly isn't going to do the rest of his body any good.  There's a reason why the digestive system is self-contained, hehe.  Digestive contents, food, crap, and whatever else is in there don't tend to mix well with the rest of the body and can cause massive infections.

Back in the old West, it was said that to shoot a man in the gut (meaning stomach or intestines) was dooming him to a horribly slow and painful death.

Reminds me of a story where a guy got shot and didn't die but you could see into his stomach so he provided invaluable medical data

Like these cows? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cannulated_cow

Very mildly gross pictures, spoilered just to be safe. No pictures on the wiki link.

My understanding is that the cows with the holes are usually healthier than the normal cows. They're used to understand how the herd is digesting the food they have and such, and allows the farmer to know if the feed mix needs to be adjusted.
History is full of maniacs, my friend, men and women of intelect, highly perceptive individuals, who's brilliant minds know neither restraint nor taboo. Such notions are the devils we must slay for the edification of pony-kind. Even if said edification means violating the rules of decency, society, and rightousness itself.

Those cows also have their stomach chambers isolated from the rest of their body via those plastic (?) dividers.  In effect it's not much different than a stoma would be in a human.
