Title: The CodeMash rape incident
Post by: The Illusive Man on November 25, 2013, 09:06:19 pm
Don’t meet Joe O'Brien, the fattest piece of shit to embarrass the male gender.

He raped Justine Arreche during a Ruby conference at CodeMash.

These events were confirmed by two other developers: Zach Briggs (http://theotherzach.com/writes/2013/10/9/events), Matt Darby (https://web.archive.org/web/20131018124920/http://blog.matt-darby.com/essays/i-am-the-other-developer). And then Neo, the company she worked for covered up the incident!

Meet Matt Darby, despite witnessing the even he tries to downplay it:

Do you think he's a predator? -- No. I think he has issues like anyone else and he made several very, very bad decisions that night. I know that he has taken steps to help his issues. (https://web.archive.org/web/20131018124920/http://blog.matt-darby.com/essays/i-am-the-other-developer)
Someone who takes sexual advantage of another due to power imbalance (being Justine’s boss) and inebriation is a fucking predator! Period! Do not defend him you utter moron!

Quote
Was there an investigation? -- Via HR, yes. I feel they handled the situation appropriately. As far as I know, no police were ever involved.  (https://web.archive.org/web/20131018124920/http://blog.matt-darby.com/essays/i-am-the-other-developer)
The police not being getting involved in a rape case is not a good thing!

Quote
Why did it take you so long to write this? -- I felt for a long time that it wasn't my place. I feel that Joe has suffered quite a lot, and is paying for his actions. Again, I'm not protecting him; that is my feeling on the subject. (https://web.archive.org/web/20131018124920/http://blog.matt-darby.com/essays/i-am-the-other-developer)
Joe raped Justine and the company silently let him go. He is to be dragged before a judge and jury! Suffering he is not, convicted he should be!

Quote
Should Joe apologize? -- That is between Joe and Justine. I feel that he owes no apology or explaination to anyone else, outside of his wife and family. (https://web.archive.org/web/20131018124920/http://blog.matt-darby.com/essays/i-am-the-other-developer)
WTF “sorry I raped you at the conference I was drunk” is not going to cut it!

TIM is making sense, this terrifies me.  Also, the fact this scumbag's allowed to so much as breathe terrifies me.

about time we focus on the real victims of rape, the rapists.

"Oh that poor man, having his face plastered all over the internet for such an innocent crime." Riiiight, rape is so fucking innocent and the only victim is the rapist.

You would not want to see my crimlaw class. One guy literally said "well, I mean, she didn't consent, but we shouldn't ruin this poor guy's life over one mistake."

He got kicked out of the school and put on a watch list, right?

Uh, yeah, mistake.

Funny how when someone violates another person, it's just a "simple mistake" and we should feel some sympathy for them.

However, when someone smokes marijuana, that's "a deliberate decision" and we throw them in jail as if they were violent thugs.  And we target black people more than we target white people for this.

Tell me again why I'm supposed to be patriotic when my country is filled with rape apologists and racists?

He got kicked out of the school and put on a watch list, right?

Somehow, I doubt it...

Nope, it's rather surprising how socialization works. Men are conditioned to speak without thinking and women are conditioned to be demure and avoid confrontation. Ergo, nobody called him out for his stupidity.

Well, he was asking for it.  Dressing up like a zombie for Halloween is like painting a big target on the back of your head!

Goddamnit, how people like this are seen as the sympathetic party just eludes me completely.

Rape culture, it is a problem that can be solved by not tolerating the rapist and those who support him or her.

Well, yeah, I knew that.  My point still stands though.
