As soon as I read that, I heard the song. It was great.
There is no plague more evil and vile to watch spread than the plague that is the Von Habsburg dynasty.

Whatever Grey is supposed to be, he completely fails at it.  If he's supposed to be a romantic hero, he's a terrible one because he's an awful person, a sexual predator who treats his girlfriend appallingly.  He also completely fails at being charming.  Really, Zapp Brannigan would make a better romantic male lead than him.  If he's supposed to be a tortured soul, that doesn't work either because he's too unlikable to be sympathetic.  The thing about the Byronic Hero is that you're supposed to like them, or failing that, at least feel sorry for them.  And if he's supposed to be a villainous sadist, he's still not a very good one because, to put it bluntly, he's really not all that threatening.  Luring a naïve doormat of a woman into an abusive relationship under the guise of BDSM is despicable, but he'd never have gotten anywhere if Ana had a brain and/or a spine.  Ramsay Snow would kick his ass to the moon and back.

The only thing these books are any good for is a study-aid in how not to write.

Or toilet paper, or fire-starting material.

The only thing these books are any good for is as standard fanfiction.net fare.

Call me crazy, but it seems there is something amiss in saying that a book that sold a hundred million copies fails at everything. Obviously sales are not the ultimate measure of a book, but you shouldn't expect a book that doesn't do anything right to do so well commercially.

Millions of people bought and presumably enjoyed 50 Shades. Many of writers have "write a book that lots of people buy and enjoy" as a goal. Unless you think 50 Shades selling as well as it did is a complete coincidence, there are writers that have something to learn from it (even if the lesson is "write Twilight-derivative porn").

50 Shades falls into 'no accounting for taste' territory.  Right alongside Twilight itself and Atlas Shrugged. And most romance novels in general.
There is light and darkness in the world, to be sure.  However, there's no harm to be had in walking in the shade or shadows.

I'm still a bit in wonder that a glorified Twilight fanfic became a best selling novel.

That's probably BECAUSE it's a glorified Twilight fanfic. From what I understand, there's a lot of overlap between "Twilight moms" and women who like the "Fifty Shades" trilogy.

That says several things about my grandmother.

No matter what happens, no matter what my last words may end up being, I want everyone to claim that they were:
"If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you could possibly imagine."
Aww, you guys rock. :)  I feel the love... and the pitchforks and torches.  Tingly!
