How long before a Republican unironically suggests "we should just let the rich people rule. They're wise."
No need, they already do.

I think another factor is the fact that the GOP is better at presenting a united front.  The Republicans have a genuine coalition, whereas the Democrats have a loosely aligned array of groups including organized labor, civil rights activists, feminists, environmentalists, etc.  And these groups are sometimes at loggerheads with one another.  For example, a labor union may support construction projects because they create jobs, but an environmentalist group may oppose them on green concerns.

It seemed for a while that the Tea Party would shake things up, but then it got hijacked by the wingnuts and started dragging the rest of the GOP further to the right.  Meanwhile, Occupy Wall Street essentially fell apart due to shortsighted moonbats trying to make it all about identity politics.  Essentially, the Democrats are like the various Jewish resistance movements in Monty Python's Life of Brian.

"People who pay more taxes should get more votes". Well, the rich will have maybe three votes between the lot of them under that system.

That explains a lot. They need to find common ground, a clear list of demands they can all agree on, compromise with each other, have a few strong leaders to represent them, some cool signature songs and chants & a good strategy. I heard that Sun Tzu's "Art of War" has a lot of good ideas and it can be applied to non-war situations.
* Also, they need to appeal to more people....like Old Farmer Brown, that Blue Collar Guy, that Church Lady, etc. Too many on the Far-Right see Progressives and the Left as a bunch of "New Age Rich Elitist Commie Pinko Hippie whatever". There needs to be an appeal to everybody, especially "rugged salt-of-the earth working folks".
* Re-define "Progressive" to include Centrists & Conservatives. Realize there's a difference between "Conservative" & "Wingnut". Realize that the GOP/Tea Party are Wingnuts. We're all in this together, after all.
* Tell everyone that all that scapegoating of "others" (non-whites, LGBTAs, Muslims) is the oldest trick in the oppressor's playbook and that folks are idiot "sheeple" for falling for it!
* Be wary of the radicals. Those guys are often Agent Provocateurs & infiltrators.

On the bright side, there's been a lot of infighting on the Wingnut side, lately.
