I dunno either... my brother was raised RC like the rest of us, lost interest for a few years, 'found Jesus' last year, and now I have to resist the urge to murder him. It's like he thinks he's 'Mr. Perfect' because he goes to church now... Seriously, I wish he'd just fucking LOSE Jesus again...

He didn't say anything that wasn't already being spewed by elected officials
I'd be more sympathetic if people here didn't act like they knew what they were saying when they were saying something very much wrong.

That doesn't make it any more acceptable for him to be saying it, and he deserves whatever bad press and reputation comes of it. People who say this shit need to be held accountable for their hate, not excused for it because some other dude hates more.

Especially because he claims to follow the teachings of Jesus, which presumably involves being accepting and not a total asshole.

Dick move, yes, but...least, from what I read, he wasn't saying "lynch them queers!" or some such other nonsense.  He can have his beliefs and his views, so long as he doesn't hurt anyone with or because of them.

I'm not picking on you or anything, but I feel like pointing something out here...

...are we all that jaded, and do we all basically EXPECT such a degree of unbridled hatred against the LGBT community, that we are willing to see a statement like this one and mark it out as 'not quite so bad' just because it simply says the queers are gross and going to destroy America, rather than Kirk braying for blood?

Hate is hate. Discrimination is discrimination. We can't just say, 'Oh, well, it's not so bad...' to things like this and focus only on the Matthew Sheppards and WBCs of the world. What makes people think they CAN commit atrocities against people of a certain demographic is a lack of justified and appropriate outrage at every successive level of hate beneath 'torture and murder'.

I know you didn't mean it this way, Rav, but I just felt like bringing this up. I'm not picking on you, I swear.

Actually...I agree.  The most dangerous hate is the casual kind, the kind that seethes in the background behind the more outwardly vile repugnance that are the likes of the Westboro Baptist Church and Rush Limburger.

That pretty much sums it up. There is so much hate that stuff like this just doesn't cause a reaction. It's usual. It's sad that it is so common but that doesn't change the fact. Everyone here especially has grown used to all but the most bloodthirsty crazies. Reading stuff on hear that would have sickened me before doesn't generate more than a shrug now, not that I like it any more now than before, it's just not at all surprising. As much as we wish we could do something in a lot of the cases brought up around here are simply out of our hands.

Why do Born Agains tend to act more obnoxious than, say, people who were born Christian?

That's actually kinda easy to explain.

They have more to "repent" for.  And by golly, they're going to go the whole nine yards because they've got a lot of making up to do.

It's like going on a fad diet, say, one where you eat only melons, and angrily insisting that everyone in your house eat only melons, too.

And by "house", I mean "planet".

I think there's a bit more to it than that. For one thing, Born Agains consciously chose to become fundamentalist Christians at some point in their lives, whereas it's kind of old news for those who are born into devout religion, so the former tend to be more gung-ho about it. Likewise, a lot of Born Agains are people who engaged in self-destructive behaviors in the past (addiction, self-harm, risk-taking, etc.) -- individuals with addictive or obsessive personalities, in other words -- and are using religion as a replacement coping mechanism for whatever the root of the problem is.

This is also true.

Pretty much any new convert to any religion, or even someone who converts to NO religion, is going to be obnoxious about it, unless they're reasoned enough to keep it to themselves.

It's like shinies.  It's human nature, when you get a shiny, to show it off for awhile, until you get tired of it and it goes in your jewelry box.

And then there are those who never stop showing off their shinies...

This seems to be true in my experience. Most of the hardcore rowdies from my old high school, as one example, were so self-destructive, vandalizing, drinking, womanizing, drugs etc. became born agains and I can't tolerate being near them. And here I am, Mr. Atheist, 20 years later and haven't been in trouble with the law, don't have substance abuse problems (well, except tobacco), and am monogamous.

What irritates me is one guy in particular (in the last few years) who always got on my case about not going to church (all self-righteous mode) yet the fucker can't keep a job, does whatever stupid drug he can get his hands on (like, the worst kind too like inhalants, crack, and amphetamines), and finds himself in and out of jail.  The ol' church-going doesn't seem to be making any real difference ...and boy did he get pissed when I pointed that out.
