On a possibly related hypocritical note, many Christians will refuse to capitalize the name "Satan," or "Lucifer" in defiance of the rules of grammar, stating some nonsense he doesn't deserve the respect. Even when they write novels or books on theology, they will write "satan" in all lower-case.

Capitalization does not equal respect, you morons.

In some genres of fiction, there's a convention that characters who have been brain-washed or otherwise lose a sense of self refer to themselves always in lowercase, doing things like spelling "I" as "i" in their dialogue.

Dialogue? Do they pronounce it as a lowercase "i" or is it only when they are sending text messages and such?
No matter what happens, no matter what my last words may end up being, I want everyone to claim that they were:

Sometimes it's supposed to be pronounced differently (how, I have no idea), but typically it's just a thing for the reader to notice.

I guess the idea is that someone who is brainwashed or under mind control or something loses all sense of self.

It might be something that's intended to come across as a little form of body/vocal language (or lack thereof).  Like... when someone said "i" instead of "I", it has less emphasis placed on it somehow when spoken.

I dunno.  All I know is... this is my first time hearing about that phenomena.

Do you write Zeus, or zeus?
That said, I've stopped trying to anticipate what people around here want a while ago, I've found it makes things smoother.

Not really the same. God isn't a proper name any more than my name is Human.
Still can't think of a signature a year later.

You know, in the 1840s, Catholics actually had to deal with severe discrimination and even violence in this country just because they weren't Protestant. They're doing pretty well in America today, all things considered. really, they should pull the sticks out of their asses.

I am reading at present a fine novel by a writer I admire, and whom, for that reason, I will not mention by name. But this novel has an irritating feature. The word ‘God’ appears throughout as ‘god’.

I love you.

"God" is a title, not a name.  The general rule for titles is that they are no capitalized unless they begin a sentence or they are used in conjunction with a name.  For Example, the word "mayor" would not be capitalized in this instance, "John is the mayor of the city," because it is not joined to the name John.  However, in this case, "He is Mayor John," mayor is capitalized because it is joined to the name.  "Obama is president," vs. "He is President Obama."

I generally don't capitalize "god" for the very reason stated above.  Also, because i do not know what kind of genitalia god has, and because I have been told god does not have any sex organs, I will often use the gender neutral pronoun "it" in reference to god.  If someone tells me their god has a penis, then I'll use the masculine pronoun "he."

I generally consider God to be a proper noun.  I capitalize it, for the same reason I capitalize Gandalf, or Gatsby, or Voldemort.
