Title: Woman lawmaker banned from speaking on the house floor...
Post by: Thejebusfire on June 14, 2012, 05:04:58 pm
After she said the word "vagina" during an abortion debate.

Quote
Michigan House Republicans prohibited state Rep. Lisa Brown (D) from speaking on the floor after she ended a speech against a bill restricting abortions by referencing her female anatomy, the Detroit News reports.

Her comment, which is on video: "Finally, Mr. Speaker, I'm flattered that you're all so interested in my vagina, but 'no' means 'no.'"

Republicans said Brown was "offensive" and wouldn't allow her to voice her opinion on an unrelated school employee retirement bill.

Responded Brown: "If I can't say the word vagina, why are we legislating vaginas? What language should I use?"

Seriously, you're legislating the female reproductive system? What was she supposed to say? "hoo-ha?" "vajayjay?" "She-who-must-not-be-named?"

For some reason I'm reminded of this:

Back on topic, it's funny how prolife congressmen think agina is an obscene word considering how they've done even more offensive and obscene things. (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/02/24/david-albo-virginia-lawmaker-no-sex-transvaginal-ultrasound_n_1300404.html)

What...

How is the correct medical term vulgar?  Especially when on the subject of abortion.

*sigh* Idiots.

I propose we ban non-procreative sex.  Anyone who wishes to object is not allowed to use the word "sex" or any euphemism thereof, or any reference to reproductive anatomy, because it is offensive.

... Whelp, I'm not hearing any opposing arguments!  Passed!

I propose that the names of all the body parts are hereafter prohibited from the English language. If a representative makes a comment about his grandma's heart during an Affordable Care Act discussion, he is banned. Humans are offensive, after all.

I propose that the members of the Michigan House who voted for this be banned.

I remember in 6th-grade sex ed, there were separate classes for boys and girls. The girls' class was giggling the whole time, but later we found out that in the boys' class, if you giggled at a word, then you had to go up to the front of the class and say it three times.

I am embarrassed for my home state. Seriously. Michigan, especially the Western part is full of prudish pricks.

Banned from EVERYTHING. Banned from life. Banned from death. These men are now, by definition, criminals.

I get the feeling they were not genuinely insulted by the word "vagina", but used it as an excuse to silence a "troublemaker".

Can I go to Michigan, find these immature twats, and start screaming "VAGINA!" over and over again through a megaphone to their face? You don't see women telling men to be silent after they mention their trouser sausages...

I'd love to see a protest of a bunch of people gathering on the steps of the building I hollering "VAGINA!"

Poems! Songs! Chants! All in honor of the most sacred of ladyparts!

Vagina-themed cuppycakes! Vagina costumes! Vagina Monologues performances! Posters of Georgia O'Keefe "flower" paintings!

Of course Republicans are offended by vaginas and those who have them -that's why they are attacking and attempting to subjugate women and their vaginas; they see them as nothing more than property/objects. They find women (and their opinions) pretty offensive. That's because they are sexist fuck buckets and evolutionary throw-backs.

Personally, while I think banning her is stupid and most likely just seizing a chance to silence some opposition, I did find her specific comment to be a tad immature. Her comment implied, however facetiously, that the Speaker of Michigan's House of Representatives wanted personal access to her specific vagina regardless of her consent. I feel that is from the same school of political discourse as the right's smear campaign against Sandra Fluke, though certainly not to same depths, in which you take a person's opinion on a political matter regarding women's health and apply downright vulgar personal motivations to it. I want political discourse in our country to be better than personal attack laden jive.

I got an email newsletter from Daily Kos about this with the subject line, “Vagina, Vagina, Vagina”
