Title: I've had enough.
Post by: Captain Jack Harkness on February 23, 2014, 10:05:59 pm
I think it's time I part ways with the people on this board.  Honestly the arguments aren't worth the stress.  I wasn't going to make a thread about it at all and just silently vanish, but...

...I wanted to give the chance for anybody who still wants to keep in contact with me the chance to PM contact details to me.  I obviously can't force anybody to do this, of course.  So whatever happens, happens.

Aww.

We are losing so many people nowadays. Maybe this forum is coming to an end soon. Well I have had mostly fun here and a lot of friends and I'm going to miss you too Harkness.

If the arguments arent worth the stress then just...ignore the argument?

Its just an internet argument, big whoop

Shame.  I liked you, Jack.

I liked you too.  Hell there are so many people I like here, even if one (or more) I like don't like another (that I also like).  It's sad when conflicts drive people away.  Makes it very hard to be neutral sometimes.

I wish you the best, Jack.  I really do hope you reconsider.

I didn't like you. You played a big part in the split.

I blame you, and some of your friends, for people I liked, such as Dante'svirgil leaving.

I will refrain from dancing on your grave or jerking over your corpse but that's it.

How is it that a site with like 20 active members has this much drama?

Apparently, a lot of them have the mindset of school kids.

I'm not talking about ripping people a new one every now and again in full view of the rest of the forum. Everyone does that, myself included, and it's not an inherently bad thing. I'm referring to stuff like the ongoing Facebook drama of some description that we only hear about once in while, and before that the exhalt/smite system abuse and the general IRC-based gossip-mongering. Not to mention, the ongoing pseudo-feud with House Rule Gaming. Conniving, passive-aggressive bullshit from idiots to cowardly to confront their supposed enemy outright that you'd expect to see between rival cliques at a high school, not an internet message board populated mostly with adults. That's by far the biggest problem we have around here.

OH OK, I don't do the IRC and don't really do facebook -certainly not with anyone here. Also if I don't like a cracker I tend to let them know. Hey who knew? I am above it!

It's not like we haven't heard that before.

I know but i just dont get WHY. It was centered around the ircs then briefly moved into f&b and died. The drama only comes up when someone outside of it brings it up for no fuckin reason and shit starts again.

I ignored the facebook thing outright, so dont care. And the exalt smite system drama was just fuckin funny

I'll second this!

The drama on this forum is simultaneously ridiculous and disturbing.

Ridiculous, because as has been pointed out, whole high schools could well be ashamed of how much of it there is.

Disturbing, because there are some opinions that cannot be expressed and some topics that cannot be broached (at least, by some people) without half the forum leaping down the throats of whoever expresses such opinions or broaches such topics, thus creating drama.

Well fuck.  People are leaving this place in droves these days.

What will become of us?   :(

I always check the stats at the bottom on the forum home page. We usually have at least 40 or more members reading the threads each day. Just not that many post, is all. You see the "lurky" nature of the place when one of the lurkers pops in with a comment out of the blue. Some of them are highly respected. Patches, for example.

We do need some forum links listed on appropriate website sidebars, though. I wish rationalwiki had such, but looking at it the other day...they just don't.

We should take this as a lesson to stop being so god-dang argumentative.
Title: Re: I've had enough.
Post by: SpaceProg on February 24, 2014, 05:03:20 pm
The problem with stopping being argumentative is it becomes nothing but an echo chamber of "This", "What he/she said", and "Me too".  Argument begs debate and explanation and other topics spring from that.
In my opinion, arguments are great, just so long as they don't degenerate to the point they end up in Flame and Burn to die in a hail of "STFU n00b!", "No U", and random kitty macros... which I admit I do like.   The kitties, I mean.

That's actually what I meant.

We need to add more settings to are arguments rather than * ;D :D :D* and *hitlernazicommunistterroristweeaboo!*

Wonder who will be the Norwegian Captain Johansen left on the ship here to face down Cthulhu in the end.

Seriously though, hope it turns for the better for everyone concerned. I never did get into any mix ups though, but I never have any time for that.

I generally deal with it by staying out of the flamewars.
Title: Re: I've had enough.

I tend to stay out of them too for the most part.  Sometimes I try to diffuse building tension with a joke or something, but I suck at humor, so... yeah.  The only reason I view most flamewars is out of morbid trainwreck curiosity and to make sure nobody is doxing or crap like that.

I think I once ended a flamewar on zoophobia by doge spamming.

Ever since Things People Say moved to the new sub-forum, I've stayed far away from F&B.

Also, I'm having trouble keeping track of who everyone is due to all the name changing.  Also, is there an active forum similar to this one that anyone could recommend in case this one goes belly up?  I'm so close to getting 1,000 posts, which I've never done on any other forum before.  This is longest I've ever been active on a single forum.

Not every debate or disagreement is a flamewar. If you're talking about the zoophilia thing, that debate was far too civil to qualify as a flamewar -- and I say that as the person who was taking the unpopular position at the time.

Or just be rude and dismissive. Whatever.

At the time it seemed to me like some kind of flamewar, but I suppose i hadn't had much experience on the sight.

I was here before all of you.  I'll still be here when everyone else is gone.  I just haven't posted a lot because I've been quite edified over the years of my exposure to the fundamentalist element and to understand what separates the members and fans from the fanboys.  I've felt that posting is just having me say practically the same things I said months ago.

Still, I'll be around.

Wait, what was your user name before? The constant changes are confusing.
