I think it's a sad aspect of society, that homosexuals are some of the nicest people on the face of the planet, yet they're outcasts of society because they defy the stereotype of love - which is considered, according to holier-than-thou pundits "between a man and a woman." Also sad, is that most of the time - while there are some homosexual couples who don't get along either - the whole "man and a woman" thing is a bunch of fairy-tale bullshit, which is expressed in the second panel with the approved couple. Also note the crucifix in the "androgynous" boy's room, and his father preparing to beat the holy shit out of him because he "looks gay," a poor child who would have been raised with love and respect and most certainly accepted by the rejected couple.
