I'm confused by that. How does that happen just as much as women getting raped?
Just as a guess...
I don't have the numbers in front of me,
* but the rate of men abused by women is a lot higher than most people would expect. But for a lot of reasons, men don't report the abuse. (They are afraid they will look "weak." They are afraid they will be laughed at. They don't realize that when a woman beats a man, that is still abuse.) The numbers of male victims of domestic violence can be estimated based on things like men's visits to ER's, responses to anonymous surveys, etc.
If I had to guess, I'd say the same holds true for male victims of rape. They don't report it because they don't think they will be taken seriously. Or they think that men cannot be raped, so if he got hard, he must have actually wanted the intercourse. Also, remember that men can be raped by other men. If a gay man is raped by another man, I would guess he would be even less likely to report it, for fear of how the police would treat him. For all of those reasons, most people assume the number of male victims of rape is negligible, when in fact it is not.
All that said, I
am surprised the number is equal to the number of women who are raped.
* I did a paper on this issue for my Domestic Violence class. I can cite numbers, but cannot link to them easily.
