I'd be more sympathetic if people here didn't act like they knew what they were saying when they were saying something very much wrong.

1/3 porn users are women.
Use this against any argument that says basically "women are turned on by more romance than porn, hence why men watch porn and women read romance novels" or "Men's sexual desires are much stronger than women's. They are helpless to their instincts".

Due to our purity culture, it is usually understood that number represents massive underreporting.
The material needs a defender more than the spiritual. If there is a higher power, it can defend itself from the material. Thus denotes 'higher power'.

I'm a guy and I get turned on by both porn and romance.

I know, but I hear that all the time and it irritates me. I remember my 8th grade teacher telling us that men watch porn because they're visual creatures, women read romance novels because they are better with language (because women are supposed to stay home and be the ones who teach their kids language).
Those arguments are always rooted in misogyny in some way, whether its purity culture or defending rapists.

I think there's also the issue that there's so little visual porn out there that caters to women.  I'm straight and female and I've browsed through a lot of porn, but have a hard time finding anything I like because almost all of it:
1) Features really unappealing men (in both appearance and attitude)
2) Is demeaning to the woman
both of which are big turn-offs.  Pretty much the only decent stuff is home videos, where the people involved are just having sex for the sake of having sex, rather than the common manufactured fantasy of "Yes, even a flabby, unwashed douchebag like you can whip and dominate this physically attractive shell of a woman into fake screams of submission."

I guess it depends on the porn really... I've seen porn that isn't sexist and gross like that.

I know I used to see a lot of women reading 50 shades of grey on the train, but not sure exactly how pornographic that is.

I'm confused by that. How does that happen just as much as women getting raped?

Just as a guess...

I don't have the numbers in front of me,* but the rate of men abused by women is a lot higher than most people would expect. But for a lot of reasons, men don't report the abuse. (They are afraid they will look "weak." They are afraid they will be laughed at. They don't realize that when a woman beats a man, that is still abuse.) The numbers of male victims of domestic violence can be estimated based on things like men's visits to ER's, responses to anonymous surveys, etc.

If I had to guess, I'd say the same holds true for male victims of rape. They don't report it because they don't think they will be taken seriously. Or they think that men cannot be raped, so if he got hard, he must have actually wanted the intercourse. Also, remember that men can be raped by other men. If a gay man is raped by another man, I would guess he would be even less likely to report it, for fear of how the police would treat him. For all of those reasons, most people assume the number of male victims of rape is negligible, when in fact it is not.

All that said, I am surprised the number is equal to the number of women who are raped.

* I did a paper on this issue for my Domestic Violence class. I can cite numbers, but cannot link to them easily.

In any statisic about sexual assault the biggest problem is that some of it is unreported. Any guess at how much of it is unreported is just a guess which is never a good thing in a scientific study. Sometimes you even hear claims such as "90% of raped women do not report it to the police."
No matter what happens, no matter what my last words may end up being, I want everyone to claim that they were:
"If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you could possibly imagine."

Not exactly, since prison rape is penetration, not forcing someone to penetrate. I believe 80% of this type of male rape are done by women.

I know it's been a while since anyone posted in this thread, but I found this graphic and I think it would fit well here.
