Priest compares gay marriage to slavery

... By saying opposing gay marriage is like the church supporting slavery because slavery does in deed have a Biblical basis. Just because something has a Biblical basis doesn't mean it's right or justifiable:

The bishop added: “It is a disaster that we have allowed the Church to be seen as the opposition to equal marriage.” He argued that by opposing the measure the Church had prompted the Government to create a “very disturbing” distinction between “religious” and “civil” marriage. “Some Christians might like to say there are more important issues than gay marriage but we are not connecting with our society and for the churches this should be a mission priority,” he said.

When I came here, I was expecting a re-post of the other priest who compared being gay to slavery. This was a very surprising change.

I find it odd that the very organized churches like Catholicism and the dutch reformed church are more open to change (they still need to be dragged kicking and screaming but they do change) than the more open liberal churches. It is probably because when the commands from higher up come along about what is and what is not considered cannon about the biblical teachings the whole church changes as opposed to the smaller churches just teaching whatever the priest feels like.

I don't think so. I mean Desmond Tutu is an Anglican bishop and for gay rights and he hasn't been excommunicated yet.

But I heard that those who wish for the church to become more conservative were asked to turn back to Catholicism.

Nah they do it differently in the Anglican church. When the church gets too tolerant the fundies threaten to excommunicate themselves.
