We can reduce the Bible to phrases that sound good in a modern context; of course, we wouldn't have much material left to work with. Would we be so forgiving to other works of literature, such as the Malleus Maleficarum or Mein Kampf? Are we so kind to works that have far less hateful messages in them than the Bible does, such as Herrnstein's and Murray's "The Bell Curve"? No, we rightly regard the hateful content in those books as indicative of the content as a whole; only after Christianity has taken such a thorough beating by nonreligious movements does it find itself desperately seeking new congregants through cherry-picking bits and pieces of its holy text that sound good and ignoring what is clearly the main messages of the Bible -- fear and hate.
Christianity lost its best argument when its adherents were no longer allowed to burn infidels at the stake.
