Apparently, the travel agent thought her husband was gay and signed them up on their best gay cruises. 

I so feel for those two poor souls, surrounded by nice, friendly people whom they hate.

The fact that is it fake aside.
I don't think her husband can actually be held hostage in that situation. He would probably go off alone to negotiate with their hostage takers quite often.
