I've gotten into a few fights already with Kylo Ren fanboys who insist he's really badass and are upset at the emo jokes. Admit to it, he's carrying on the Skywalker family tradition of being a drama queen. I think having an unstable manchild as a villain is entertaining. Plus the fact that both him and Hux are on the verge of beating the crap out of each is too funny, willing to bet Supreme Leader Snoke has taken up the bottle due to listening to those two on a daily basis.

That being said it was fucking genius casting Adam Driver as Ben"Kylo Ren" Solo, given that both him and Harrison Ford have the same fucking crooked nose.

Note that Kylo never killed people while raging. When someone failed Vader he choked them to death. Kylo smashes furniture and electronics. Even that one time when he turned on his saber and the officer was certain he was going to die Kylo just tore up his room.

He did kill innocent people and ordered the deaths of many more but despite all his angst he is still more reasonable boss than Vader.

I don't see why Ren can't be both extremely unstable and a badass at the same time. You might argue that the whinyness undermines the badass part, but remember that the Dark Side of The Force is supposed to be fueled by passion and rage.

Also Kylo has been described by JJ as a villain in progress.  He hasn't reached the final stage yet, though I believe he took a huge step forward (at least in the eyes of the audience)

I'm not sure how anyone can watch that movie and not come out thinking Ren is a whiny emo prettyboy.

Also I think his killing of Han just made he even more unstable and it's setting up for a redemption arc of some sorts at the end of it all

there is no redemption arc and it ends with Chewie ripping his arms off and tossing him out an airlock while jedi girl shows the big bad that bringing lightning to a lightsabre duel is actually a very bad idea. Bonus points if the only black man in the universe discovers his home planet and race are the Star Wars equivalent to Rivendell and the elves thus explaining both the scarcity and inherent badassness of black characters.

The no redemption arc thing, no opinion on black people being elves.

I know -- it's Disney.

The truth of it is, that's an ending that would appeal to me, someone who has watched the originals as a child and grown up since then. A non-cliche ending would make for a fantastic critically acclaimable ending but the kids that this series is intended for don't need or want one and it would actually be to their determent of their enjoyment to include one.

The most interesting person from this film is Kylo Ren. Where did he come from? Why did he turn to the dark side? How could someone with force training lose to a n00b? What makes him tick? Everyone wants to find out more about this character's backstory. My theory, he is not Han and Leia's son: he is, in fact, J.P. from Grandma's Boy. They have the same physical appearance, the same fondness for black clothes, the same temper tantrums, and I could see J.P. becoming a sith lord after his robot operations. It's all there. The prophecies have foretold it.

It makes sense that Kylo Ren, despite the way he's obviously peacocking to make himself look cooler and be more intimidating, isn't as impressive as the Sith Lord he's desperately trying to emulate. He was raised by both his parents, is incredibly gifted with the Force and likely knew so from a young age and never really experienced any tragedy or grew up in an oppressive environment, so even when convinced to turn to the Dark Side, he doesn't have much darkness in him beyond petulant whining and temper tantrums. He lets Hux boss him around, insult him to his face and tattle on him to Snoke. Even his lightsaber and Force abilities seem to be used more for intimidation than fighting an equally armed opponent. Given the scene of Rey lampshading his Vader fanboyism while being Mind Probed by him, it's highly likely this was the Intentional Audience Reaction. To wit, Bad Robot knew they couldn't really top Vader as The Heavy so they deliberately set out to create a villain who was trying to be The Heavy and failing miserably, and everybody in the film knew it.

...I know how you feel. Although I have to admit that people were pretty good at keeping Star wars spoilers behind spoiler tags or otherwise issuing warnings when they were about to discuss the film. And it was pretty much the same all over the net.
