I doubt this'll cause any problems in the US, considering how strict we've been with quarantines and general patient care. Definitely not a plague equivalent.

That still hasn't stopped people from commenting on the USA today article from blaming Obama to saying this is a sign of the end times.

Everybody remember back in 2003-04 when the "mad cow" disease was the big virus that everyone was afraid of? Or the West Nile virus in 2000-02? Or Swine flu in 2009?

To be fair, Ebola is a lot scarier than some of those.

I don't think this is going to become another Spanish flu pandemic. It definitely won't be the Black Plague. We'll probably see a ban on travel to Libya, Nigera, and the region most affected by Ebola, and a trade embargo as well.

The worrying long-term aspect of this is that the WHO thinks Ebolavirus will reach endemic status in West Africa. Such a travel ban would become unenforceable as it would last at least several decades.

The good news is that Ebolavirus kills us too quickly. I wouldn't worry about a global pandemic unless a new strain develops that becomes contagious several days before symptoms show up.

Just because the first case is over here in Texas (Dallas) I can't wait for Rush Limbaugh or some other Right-wing greaser to gloat how "It's because liberals are gaining a foothold in Texas and this is God's wrath against supporters of Wendy Davis and Lettica Van de Putte" or whatever form of bunkum.
