So, Mike Rowe of Dirty Jobs fame got a letter from someone accusing his foundation of right wing propaganda. His response? Well, I think his intentions are in the right place, but still implies a belief that poor people are lazy more often than not.

Specifically, he cites that he saw a number of help wanted signs while working on Dirty Jobs, while ignoring that many of these jobs require experience and that the hiring process takes time. Jobs aren't instantly filled the moment someone puts in an application.

He also points out that hiring managers complain about people who don't take care to do the basics of appearance. OK, fair complaint. You know what's worse? The fact that the vast majority of job interviews are less about your skills and potential and more about how good you are at job interviews. There are terrible workers who can get job after job after job, despite being fired from every one of them because they're good at the interview process, while great workers that aren't very good at interviews get left behind because they can't interview well enough to get a job.

You know, it's stupid but I next thought of Mike Rowe as having political leanings.

You know, it's stupid but I never thought of Mike Rowe as having political leanings.

What did Mike Rowe say or do that's Right-Wingy?

I confess I've never watched his show but I always thought he was a cool guy. I also remember him from QVC, he was hysterical!

What the heck is this all about?

Here's the thing, I actually think the initial letter was stupid. As rookie put it, Rowe never came off as someone with a political agenda. I like Mike Rowe and I like that he is trying to raise awareness of jobs that people either aren't aware of or simply don't think of when trying to find a job.

My point of contention with Rowe is described above. I feel like there's a lot of stuff Rowe is missing in his response to the accusations. Unsurprisingly, right wing trash "media" like YoungCons and Chicks on the Right as well as the only marginally better The Blaze  are now venerating Rowe as a right-wing hero for this post.

If he is a right winger, as opposed to centerish leaning right, that would make sense. How he comes across, it seems like he'd be more likely to jump into a conversation about the importance of relief pitching than political matters. He comes across as an everyman. Now the public perception problems the GOP is facing, they could really use an every man.

Ok. I read the link. I avoided it because of my intense dislike of Facebook. Now that I know what this is about, first, please disregard him in this post. And I wish I had a tenth of his class and demeanor.

I wish this guy was in the GOP. We'd actually have some decent political competition.

Mike was a HILARIOUS QVC Host!....  ;D

QVC has been a guilty pleasure for me since...forever...When Dirty Jobs first came out I was like "Where have I seen this guy before? I can't...quite...place it....."  :-\
Then I heard about these old QVC bits and it all came back to me!  :o

He didn't even want that job. He basically applied on a whim as a joke. He had no idea he would be hired. I'll bet his fellow QVC hosts wanted to strangle him. ::)

He also appeared in a spoof on his Dirty Job show on Sesame Street, getting some of that "Sesame Street Cred", as TV Tropes calls it.
