That's probably a misconception, but if he had wanted to be king he probably could have gotten enough support to do so.And he could well have been president-for-life if he hadn't stepped down after two terms in office as well. In fact, it's really lucky that George Washington was a genuinely nice guy who stuck to his principles; if he'd been ambitious enough, he could well have turned the United States into a self-serving dictatorship.
Life for the sake of life means nothing.
