Language Learning Thread
« on: March 24, 2012, 10:15:45 pm »
I know there's a conlang thread in another subforum, so mods feel free to move this if it's in the wrong subforum.

This thread is for anyone on the forum who is learning another language. It can also be a thread to discuss the languages you want to learn, have learned, or just be a resource-sharing thread for languages in general.

Right now I am learning:
Spanish - doing quite well (but the past preterite tense is a bitch and I can't roll my rrs)
Mandarin Chinese - I was doing well, but my teacher isn't very good, so I'll probably stop the class and start over at some later time

I plan on learning:
Russian (Good to know if you plan to go into the technology field where I live, also there's a lot of resources available)
Tagalog (I have a beginner's book on this already)
Italian (I found an entire high school textbook on this in my basement)
Arabic (Modern Standard Arabic of course, I'll try to pick up the details of the gajillion or so dialects later)
French (because it's a Romance language like Spanish, and I wanna Catch 'Em All)

I want to learn (even though I have no chance):
Polish (I took a look at the phonemes and cried)
Basque (OVER 9000 CONJUGATIONS)
Korean
isiZulu (It has click consonants! :D)
Swahili
Maltese (Because it is a Semitic language written in the Latin alphabet with Italian loanwords, I find it very interesting.)

I know English from growing up in America  :P
I know some German from taking it four years in high school and four years at university (aber, mein Deutsch ist schlecht)
I would like to learn Arabic, but I already know I'm too lazy to commit to learning it at the moment  :-\

I speak French more or less fluently, and I have a faltering grasp of German from living there for a few months every year. I currently live in China studying Mandarin, so I have an alrightish level of Mandarin and a bit of Cantonese.

Languages I plan to learn:
German
Cantonese
Romanian
Spanish
Japanese
Mongolian
Portuguese
Bulgarian

I sort of plan on working as a translator or an interpreter in the future so these are all achievable.
Oh look it's me.

Italian was my college language, and I have substandard Spanish and barely passable American Sign Language, lol.

I love languages, but I have no natural talent for them.  While I'd love to learn Japanese, for example, I'm really better off trying to strengthen the Spanish and the Italian.  Incidentally, I've found the one on one study with a native speaker that you can find sometimes locally to be WAY more effective than any class I've ever had to sit through.

I know a little bit of Spanish, I took it both in high school and college. I found it to be difficult for some reason(please don't laugh). I do want to try to learn French.

I want to learn Irish, but I can't afford Rosetta Stone right now, so I downloaded a phone app just to get started, get a taste for it.

I know enough French to get by when traveling in the more heavily French-speaking parts of Quebec, though I'm not fluent in conversational French.  I try to read through websites, etc. written in the language to keep what I know fresh and pick up new words, as well as brush up on my grammar. Eventually, I hope to spend some time living in Quebec in order to become fluent. I have tons of family out there, too, so that's a nice bonus.

I speak English and Incomprehensible Northern Babble.

I've forgotten pretty much all the French and Spanish I learned in High School.

I quite fancy learning Swedish and Latin (because why the fuck not).

I've learned enough Spanish to have conversations or get by in a Spanish-speaking country, but I'm not fluent.

I'd like to learn more Latin.
