Y'know, as a broadcasting major, I resent this. Yes, corporate interests play a role in what gets on the air (we need sponsor money to live), but the biggest interest in deciding what gets on the air is what gets ratings. It's part of why "missing white woman syndrome" exists. And "rich" only really applies to the cable folks, but that's most likely who the person painting that was thinking of anyways.
